The primary classroom, commonly known as the “Children’s House,” serves as a nurturing environment for children aged 3 to 6. Various educational settings might refer to this stage as Casa, preschool, early childhood, or simply primary.
Within this vibrant mixed-age setting, children are empowered to take charge of their learning experiences, exploring their interests while benefiting from the guidance of older mentors. This dynamic interaction fosters a sense of community and collaboration. During these formative years, as children begin to discover the intricacies of their developing bodies, much of the coursework is thoughtfully designed to enhance their coordination and control, laying a strong foundation for their physical and cognitive growth.
There are four characteristics of the Montessori primary classroom that separate it from others:
- Children always have access to materials and will find the classroom accessible.
- Children are responsible for their own work, which means that they need to be aware of others, keep the classroom clean and tidy, put things away when they are done, behave as role models for younger students, and more.
- Children have freedom within limits.
- The classroom is designed to be beautiful and harmonious. Maria Montessori believed that the environment should be pleasing to the eye to encourage concentration, calmness, and self-direction.
